Stars Over Scott Quilt

Quiet often, I find myself making another Stars Over Scott.  They are quick, large and great for masculine gifts. It is also one of my favorites and named for my son Scott.  The above quilt finishes at 86" X 98".

For this version, I used 6" (finished) HSTs -- it is the only block you need -- 164 of them.  The free pattern is linked here ... Stars Over Scott.

The recipient of this quilt will always be known for wearing plaid shirts.  I knew I had to find something plaid for backing.  I have to give credit to Andrea with Quiltingfor4, a new designer who raved about the Target Flannel Sheets.  I haven't used flannel before, so I washed the sheets first in case of shrinkage.   I used a queen size flat  and loved it.  Great quality, no distortion after washing and normal shrinkage for flannel.  I also used one of the pillowcases for presentation.

Stars Over Scott, Reader Show and Tells

"Stars Over Scott" is a pattern I designed and named for my son Scott.  The pattern is free and is available on this site.  If  you have made "Stars Over Scott", I would love to share here.  Please email me a copy (address in profile) and let me know your story.

First up -- A team within our local Cane Cutter Guild, made this Red/White Version during their Jamboree (teams set up and make quilt tops for their Helping Hands Inventory).   Team captain, Nita Mazerac on the left.

The Blue/White Stars Over Scott was made by Mary V (@maryv57).  I was thrilled to come across this picture on Instagram and asked permission to share.

Both color versions would be perfect for a Quilt of Valor.  Thanks to both Nita and Mary for sharing!!

Rainbow Challenge - Dark Green Stars

Last stars of the year; with dark sage greens.

Our guild also had our annual Jamboree earlier today, with each team responsible for sewing together a top from 6 1/2" HSTs donated by our members all year.  As a team leader, I chose one of my patterns, "Stars Over Scott", with my assigned colors of medium to dark greens with a few pinks. In about 2 1/2 hours we had a completed top - which also fits into our October Rainbow Challenge of dark/sage green.

Quilt of Valor, Stars Over Scott

Back in 2011, I designed "Stars Over Scott" as a way to use up Half Square Triangles -- there are 168 HSTs in this top, nothing else.  The Top comes together easily and when a call comes in for an Emergency Quilt of Valor, it is a great "Go-To" pattern.

Finished Size:  72" X 84" (used 6 1/2" HSTs)

Every so often, I will search Google, or Pinterest and find a new "Stars Over Scott" someone else has made.  It doesn't matter what size HST you use, the results are always the same.  The above version is without a border .... however below is one I made in 2013, with borders because I used smaller HSTs. (Donated for Breast Cancer Awareness).

Scrap Control Update and Quilt of Valor

The 2 1/2" strip scrap bin is still full .... as I have only added 3 more blocks. As soon as possible, I will pull out all of the long strips (brights only) and start matching them up into strip sets.

The Quilt Of Valor below that has taken over the sewing room, was loaded on the long arm, basted, then quilted.  I used my pattern "Stars Over Scott", for a quick finish. Once the binding and label is done, it will be off to California for a young veteran, whose service we are so thankful for.

The "Stars Over Scott", uses 6" (finished) half square triangles, and measures 72" X 84" -- since I used larger HSTs, I omitted the borders.  The great thing about this pattern, you can use any size HST you want to achieve the quilt size needed.

I follow along with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, who helps us stay accountable to the growing scrap bins. Check with her often for ideas on how to tame the stash.

When Lighting Strikes

In Southern Louisiana, we have had a lot of bad weather, including lighting storms. We now have a new internet service, new phones and lucky we did not lose more.  I have been wanting to share these beautiful batik quilts made by Kathy from Texas. She used my "Stars over Scott" pattern, named for my son.  The quilts are made using batik HSTs!  That's it.  Good way to use up scraps.

In the works, busy quilting tops for new patterns by Black Cat Creations.  The Houston Market is just around the corner.

Linking up with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict to show off Kathy's quilts.

Ladies Night Out - Finish

The 7th Ladies Night Out Gala to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness is coming soon -- March 15th.  My quilt donation has been finished and delivered -- and as you can see, I could not resist taking pictures of the quilt when I made the delivery to my friend Paul -- his yard is awesome!  A true work of art.

Another view of the yard -- the quilt was only a prop to get more pictures of the glorious pool.

Updated info:  The pattern used - "Stars Over Scott", designed by Jamie Elfert, a free pattern available on this site.

Quilting Tops, Stars Over Scott

I can't wait to start quilting this "Stars Over Scott"!   Feathers, feathers and more feathers.  I will also get to use the beautiful pearl pink Glide Thread -- love the stuff!  The quilt is for a Breast Cancer Awareness Event called "Ladies Night Out" in March.  I was asked to something "Pink" -- well it is 'PINK"!

The Scrappy Geese Quilt is almost done.  This one is from the string blocks left behind by my grandmother and with Bonnie Hunter's help, they became flying geese.  My goal is to finish at least one Utility Quilt per month using my grandmother's string blocks for family members.  A little more of the story behind the strings is here.  Month #2, Utility Quilt #2, YEA!

"Wink Wink" -- It's Pink!

It is the last weekend for the Color Pink (Rainbow Scrap Challenge).  Using up most of the 1 1/2" and 2" strips for this quilt, the scraps have been greatly diminished.   I have been  testing border fabrics and have narrowed down to a couple of ideas.  I will probably sleep on it and decide tomorrow.  I had not intended on making this top very big, but it may finish at 70 x 70 after the borders are added.

Thank goodness Angela (So Scrappy) picked the color Pink for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.  I have a deadline for mid February to deliver the above Pink "Stars Over Scott" Quilt for the "Ladies Night Out" Breast Cancer Awareness Fund Raiser.  I was able to use up pre-cut 5 1/2" strips cut from fabric left over from other quilts made.    The borders are cut and ready to add on -- I am anxious to see how this one finishes up.  I will be using a soft pink Glide Quilting Thread -- which has such a pretty pearl sheen.

I still had 2 1/2" strips and 4 1/2" strips not touched yet, so I made a few HSTs and 4-patches for the Rainbow Quilt at the end of the year.  Because of the cancer fund raisers, I have accumulated an obscene amount of pink fabric -- along with an overflowing amount of pink scraps.

I am also joining Sarah with Confessions of a Fabric Addict for her Whoop Linky, who just happened to make an orange quilt from my pattern (Blue Me Away).  I have also made this pattern in purple, blue and PINK (seen here)!

A Day of Pink

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge hosted by Angela at SoScrappy continues.  It seems the more I pulled from the scrap box, the bigger the pile grew.  I have been sewing on pink all day, so I am late posting.  I made several strings, as "leaders and enders" (a.k.a. Bonnie Hunter),  as I sewed the rows together for the Pink Stars.   Above is the start for the hourglass unit.  To make the block below, I used strings for the HSTs, the rail fences and the hourglass centers.  The white Kona background calms down all the pink.

Turning to form the hourglass
.

Horizontal Setting.

 Set on point.

I have most of the rows for the Pink "Stars Over Scott" sewn together in 3 sets -- above is the right side -- tomorrow I will finish the inside top and then add the borders.  BUT, I need to work on something else in between, all of the pink today had me thinking of Pepto!

Pink Stars Over Scott and Easy Street Update

For 2013, I have joined Angela, with SoScrappy, with her monochromatic use of scraps.  The month of January is Pink, which turned out to be a great beginning for me.  I have made a few "Pink" quilts for my many nieces and those designated for Breast Cancer Awareness fund raisers.   This of course has accumulated a healthy stash of pinks.  "Stars Over Scott" is a simple use of 168 HSTs forming 5 stars, using 5 1/2" strips -- each HST finished at 5".  This finished quilt will be donated to a fund raiser scheduled in March.

Now I need to tackle the use of the other pink strips still remaining in a variety of sizes. But first, a few finishes from the stack of other projects.

Bonnie Hunter's "Easy Street" Mystery blocks are sewn together and hanging on the long arm frame while I audition different borders.  The top went together easily and it paid off planning the pressing directions before I started to assemble.  I had a few changes in directions, but very minimal.  If I can't decide on a border, I may go without, or piece something from the left-overs.

For the Monday Design Wall link, I am heading to Judy's at Patchwork Times (who by the way, had me hooked on the monochromatic colors in 2011).

In the Pink / Stars Over Scott Pattern

I love monochromatic quilts - very scrappy ones are my favorite.  This month "Pink" is the starring color in SoScrappy's Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013  I need (168) 5 1/2" HST's for the layout below and above is half-way there.  I don't think I put a dent in the 5 1/2" strips; a size collected from the other pink monochromatic quilts made.  I also have a box of 3 1/2", 2 1/2", 2" and 1 1/2" pink strips that I have not touched yet.  The free Stars Over Scott pattern is available on this site.

Monday Design Wall

Heather and Megan are hosting a simple Block of the Month project over at Quilt Story. I have been having so much fun with my new quilting machine, I forgot to post my April Blocks with HSTs above -- shown with March blocks. Leaves and Diamonds showcase the HSTs from an original design by Marcia Hohn at The Quilters Cache.

Finished except for the hand work, Stars Over Scott in Red is done -- the 2nd Finish of the Year, and the 2nd Finish on my new Gammill. I am sticking to my favorite patterns so I can get used to the feel of the machine -- it is very different than a home machine (obviously), but similar in movements.
The top is done for the H2H Challenge hosted by Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict. I hope to be quilting it by the weekend -- however I need to finish the Relay for Life Quilt Below.
Dance of the Tiger is almost done -- After I finish the borders, I am moving it to my Janome for simple straight stitching. I need more practice before on straight lines (even with the ruler, it will take time). I will post the last step for this quilt -- adding the borders --- later this week.

Monday Design Wall - Red

Finishing up a few tops getting ready for a marathon quilting frenzy. The Red Monochromatic center of the top is almost done -- then I'll pull the fabric for the borders. Behind this top is the beginning of the Pink Monochromatic. The pattern is "Stars Over Scott", named for my son. The simple one-block layout is available here.

Show and Tell

A quick little Show and Tell from our local "Cane Cutter Quilt Guild".

Marlene has already finished her "DJ Quilt" above.

Louise's version of the "DJ Quilt" pattern -- this is absolutely adorable. She added the sail boats to the solid blocks! Great adaptation.

Alice finished her "Stars over Scott" top using her large collection of 5" squares, and added to the size with additional HST. Looking forward to seeing this one quilted.

I have more, but will save a few for later.

Friday Sharing

A few quilts from our local guild workshop. Geralyn and her RWB Beauty! I have seen this pattern somewhere, and attempted to find the name and designer with no luck -- If I find it, I will update. Update: The Pattern is called Saddle Trap and was featured in the McCalls Quick Quilts Magazine, in October/November 2010 Issue. I also found the pattern designer's Blog -- I am now a new fan. Thanks to Anne and Wonky Girl finding the links.

Donna and Alice's strip quilts -- I loved these!

I am so proud -- recognize "The DJ Quilt". Marlene has finished and sandwiched this in record time! If you need a fast masculine quilt -- here is the pattern link. It is in PDF form - but if you are having trouble opening, send me an email (see profile for address) and I will send it to you.

Other ladies were working with this pattern at the workshop, so I hope to show other versions when they are finished. A few are very girly -- so it works for both boys and girls.

Alice is making "Stars over Scott" -- now my head is swelling. This pattern of course is named for my son Scott. Alice used her 5" charm squares, which produces a smaller version -- absolutely perfect.

And here is my project (at least the one I can share) -- it is the back of the Orange Monochromatic Challenge (hosted by Judy of Patchwork Times) I have been quilting on for over a week. If I would just dedicate time to quilting, it would be finished....however I keep getting side tracked with piecing a special little project.

Because it is Friday, I am linking up to Sarah's Whoop Party over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Stars Over Scott, Red Quilt Update

Not finished yet ... however making progress in between other projects. The Monochromatic Challenge hosted by Judy over at Patchwork Times dedicated "Red" for the month of May. The pattern I am using is my favorite "Stars over Scott", which is named after my DS. Here is the original and the pattern. Indigo for June. I have only a few pieces of deep blue indigos, so we may have a small project, which will also allow me to catch up.

Although Fridays are my favorite to display "Finished" projects and linking up with Sarah's Whoop Link Party, I will only have a work in progress. Be sure to visit "Confessions of a Fabric Addict" and see what other quilters are up to today.

End of Month Report -- WOW!

What a month! For Judy's Monochromatic Challenge, I just started Red 3 days ago! My favorite color and it was due today. No problem, I am quilting the Orange Quilt first (April's color), next is H2H Blue/Yellow for charity, then the Red quilt below. If I would make them smaller, I probably would get more done. Oh Well. Then, there is the Drunkard's Path ... it is for a fund raiser, however it will be quilted by a long-armer.

The pattern chosen for my Red quilt is "Stars Over Scott". I love this pattern (maybe because it is named for my son :). A little smaller than my original pattern, I started with 10" squares my sister made from a huge collection of our fabric, cutting them down into 5" squares. Same instructions, except the block finishes to 4" square.

On Memorial Day, I headed to Hancock's to buy a box of batting (40% off), with another 10% coupon. I must have ran into a dozen quilty friends. It turns out, Alice and Mary Ann are also making "Stars Over Scott"! Alice is using several colors of reds, greens, blues ... and Mary Ann browns and greens. I can't wait to see them finished and able to share here.

Speaking of sharing -- Cherie over at Quilted Jonquil has made "Kristy's Dream" for her granddaughter, Liliana Sofia (such a sweet baby). My niece Kristy will be so flattered!

On a Blogger Note: Over the weekend, I upgraded to Internet 9 Explorer (I9E). Everything went wacky! I could not publish anything. For those of you having Blogger trouble after upgrading ... I closed out everything, then restarted the internet using Google Chrome and it is working again. Thank Goodness! I started this post Monday night -- so it only took 24 hours to publish.

Finish - Stars Over Scott

Free  detail "Stars Over Scott" pattern available here.

A scrappy 76" x 86" quilt using 168 - 6 1/2" squares (84 Light, 84 Med-Dark); 3/4 yard for the inside border, 2 1/2 yards for outside border (if cutting length of fabric) or 1 3/4 yard (if cutting width of fabric), 3/4 yard for binding and 5 1/2 yards for backing.

Closeup of the quilting.

Making the block:

Using 6 1/2" squares of one each light and med-dark, place right sides together, draw a line diagonally down the center, sewing 1/4" on each side of the line. Cut diagonally in half (as shown) along the drawn line. Open and press the half square triangles, trim to a perfect 5 1/2" square. Using the layout below, sew 12 blocks across, with 14 rows down.

Borders:
Inside: Sew together 7 - 2 1/2" strips diagonally and cut 2 - 70 1/2" strips for the sides, 2 - 64 1/2" strips for the top and bottom.

Outside: Cutting from the Length of fabric, cut 2 - 6 1/2" x 74 1/2" strips for the sides, 2 - 6 1/2" x 76 1/2" for the top and bottom.

Binding: 9 - 2 1/2" strips, joined diagonally.

That's it -- one block, quick and easy.

Now, I am heading over to Sarah's to link up to her Whoop Friday at Confessions for a Fabric Addict.
