Hands2Help, 2021 Comfort Quilts

 

It's that time of the year again .... sewing machines are busy completing comfort quilts for the 2021 Hands2Help Quilt Challenge, hosted by Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  This is my 11th year participating and I couldn't be prouder.  

With the Pandemic, I have a feeling this will be the largest collection yet.   Visit the Hands2Help 2021 page on Confessions of a Fabric Addict for a parade of beautiful quilts.

The six (6) quilts I donated this year, went to Emily, with Aunt Ems Quilts; for her charity Quilty Hugs for Happy Chemo.  A side note, Emily also has a You Tube Channel with Sew Alongs and tutorials. 

The first quilt - "Chunky Pinwheels, is a collection of 8" blocks.   Each block contains (4) units with the following pieces:

  

After completing the Chunky Pinwheels, I had a boat load of HSTs, which were a good size to make regular pinwheels.  The next quilt used all of those HSTs, plus many more from my stash. Doing the math, 208 Pinwheels from 832 HSTs!

Quilt #3, String Quartet (Black Cat Creations), used a stash of Kaffe Fassett strings left over from other projects.  As named, this pattern was designed to use those long skinny pieces.

Rainbow Blocks, Aqua Strings

I have been so busy behind the scenes with new projects, that I am a little behind on my rainbow blocks.  The aqua strings are so pretty and remind me of spring -- even down in South Louisiana, we are unsure how to dress from one day to the next.

Rainbow Challenge, Green Strings

I am so tempted to continue with future colors for these strings blocks, they are an easy block to make. I have the perfect pattern forming in my head.

And....I just noticed, my finished project from yesterday .... has both yellow from last month and green. The Tea Towel Shams are screaming SPRING!

Rainbow Scrap Challenge - Yellow

In addition to having a problem with collecting fabric...there is a tiny little issue with Tea Towels.  Don't the lemons just scream Spring???  I still have a few from my grandmother's stash that she made from feed sacks.

Kelly Girl Quilt:  The yellow hexagons are attached except for the three at the bottom and a few black/white. This has been a great on-the-go project and is so relaxing.

String Blocks:  Four 5 1/2" yellow/gold strings.  No problem finding enough strings to whip these up.

Rainbow Challenge, Red/Yellow

The framing around the red hexagon diamond is finished and I have just starting the yellow. Because the black and white hexies are sashing, I won't need to frame all sides of the yellow.    More about the pattern here.   The designer Kathy did not have a special name, however I'm calling it "Kelly Girl"

Round three of blocks came from Angie's suggestion of string blocks.  Mine are finishing at 5", so I have made them 5 1/2" .....  haven't decided how many I'll make each month, so I'm starting with four.  I am sure there are enough yellow strings for next week.  

I have one more set of blocks to complete for my red month -- I'll wait until next week, as these have a special story and destination.

Rainbow Challenge and Star Strings

March Greens have really changed the dynamic of the blocks above; with small circles forming as the blocks are butted up to each other.  The pattern is not mine, however if I ever locate this block in print (I'm sure I have seen it before); I will give the designer or magazine credit.  It has been a lot of fun going through my old magazines looking for this block (an excuse to relax and browse the old fashion way) ....  all I can remember is that it was vintage.

And...since we are on the subject of Rainbow quilts, the string quilt was born from newspaper foundations  made with a 60 degree ruler - the foundation unit was 6 1/2" tall.  Made for a class demonstration on 60 degree rulers, I have always wanted to go back and make a much larger variation of this quilt.  Oh well, one day.  (No pattern, the quilt was achieved by using the design wall and a lot of twisting and turning).
