Nana's Utility Quilts, #1

Our Maternal Grandmother ("Nana") was born October 14, 1913.  This year, she would have been 100 years old.  Complications from Alzheimer's took her life in 2006, but not before Nana made many utility quilts for her family and also left behind numerous finished tops and blocks waiting for quilts.

To celebrate her life, my mission this year is to finish as many of her utility quilts that I can.  Join me as I attempt to finish many of them before her birthday.  This will also give me the opportunity to practice new quilting designs and use some of her yardage for the backings.

What a loving tribute to your Nana! My mom finally dragged my sister and me along with her to a sewing retreat she had been going to for about 20 years. In a couple years WE were the ones dragging her along, as she couldn't remember how to get there or how to operate her sewing machine or participate in any of the classes that were offered. So I had her sit with me in the Do Your Own Thing class (my favorite anyway) and we did simple quilts for Project Linus while I helped her operate my Singer Featherweight. She could just barely remember how to work that machine. Those are great memories to have, aren't they?

What a wonderful project to pursue this year. I also see you have red snappers. How do you find them?

I am sure you will complete much! It is a wonderful way to use those motifs that are just 'lurking' in your idea bank!!!! I have a "ton" of them!!! A very inspiring goal....hugs, Doreen

That's a beautiful quilt, Jamie! Just curious, why do you call them "utility" quilts?
