Antique Quilts

While I am quilting tops, thought I would share a couple of antique quilt tops made by my Greatgrandmother, Mary. She was a midwife/nurse in a little town west of Houston, Texas. When she died in 1968, Granny left behind over 200 quilt tops in various stages of completion. Her tops were made from old clothes and feedsacks donated by many of her friends and family. Even the thread was carefully removed from the feedsacks and used to piece the blocks. My Grandmother, Lydia (the oldest of 5 children), completed several of the tops for family over the years and still did not put a dent in the stash. Our grandmother died four years ago, leaving my sister and I the task of finishing the quilts.

What a TREASURE! How can you ever decide which one to work on first, with that many to choose from?

How wonderful to have all of those precious quilts! That she even used the feed sack thread is a testament to those times of waste not, want not. Both the fan and the butterfly tops are amazing. I could just look at the fabrics in them all day.

How lucky you are! I have one old quilt my grandmother made and I really treasure it. Its not in the best shape, but I still love it. No wonder quilting is in your veins with as prolific a quilters as your grandmother being in your family tree.
