The size of the quilt is determined by the size of the HST’s used. The quilt can be made with and without borders, therefore the sizes below reflect both options. At the end of this post, a coloring page is provided for you to create your own color palette.

*One focus fabric has been assumed; if you use an
alternate and/or multi-color version, you will need to adjust the focus fabric
requirements. My favorite is a scrappy
version, where you shop from your stash and use a large variety of fabrics.
Cutting Directions:
Cut (11) 5”
strips, then cut (84) 5” squares

Border #1
Cut (6) 1 ½”
strips, join together diagonally for one long strip. Note:
Cut the border units after the top has been assembled. Further instructions in the assembly.
Border #2
Cut (6) 4 ½”
strips, join together on the straight edge for one long
strip. Note: Cut the border units after the top has been
assembled with Border #1 attached.

Binding
Cut (7) 2 ½”
strips, join together diagonally.
Medium (Blocks: Trimmed to Unfinished size of 5 ½” square,
Finished 5”)
Background Fabric:
Cut (14) 6” strips, then cut (84) 6” squares

Border #1
Cut (7) 1 ½” strips, join together diagonally

Border #1
Cut (9) 1 ½” strips, join together diagonally

Border #2
Cut (9) 6 ½” strips, join together on the straight
edge for one long strip. Note: Cut the border units after the top has been
assembled with Border #1 attached.

Binding
Cut (10) 2 ½” strips, join together diagonally.
Quilt Assembly
Half Square Triangles (HSTs) - (164)
needed: Note …. The HSTs are oversized
to trim down.
Draw a diagonal line on the back of the (84) background
squares. With right sides together,
place a background square on top of a focus fabric square. Using a 1/4” seam allowance, sew on each side
of the drawn line. Cut in half along the
drawn diagonal line and press to the darker focus fabric. Repeat (84) times to generate (168) HSTs.
Trim each HST to size required: Small (4.5”); Medium (5.5”); Large (6.5”).
On a design wall (floor), layout the (168) HSTs using the
“Quilt Top Diagram” below. VERY
IMPORTANT --- Take a snapshot of your design wall/floor before
sewing the rows together, to verify the HSTs are positioned correctly. Viewing a small picture on a phone/camera
highlights a wrong turn.
Label each of the (14) rows. Removing one row at a time, sew the (12) HSTs
across, pressing the odd numbered rows to the right and even rows to the left
for easy nesting of seams.
Adding Border #1*:
·
After the (14) rows are sewn together, measure
from top to bottom down the middle of the quilt top.
·
Cut (2) lengths of this measurement from the
long Border #1 strip (cutting directions instructed all border strips joined
together).
·
Attach to the sides of the quilt top. Hint:
Start pinning the borders from the center; pin the corners; and then
ease the remaining border evenly between corners and middle pins.
·
Press toward the border.
·
Measure from left to right sides of the quilt
top across the middle.
·
Cut (2) lengths of this measurement from the
remaining Border #1 strip.
·
Attach to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Adding Border #2:
·
After Border #1 has been attached, measure from
top to bottom down the middle of the quilt top.
·
Cut (2) lengths of this measurement from
the long Border #2 strip (cutting directions instructed all border strips
joined together).
·
Attach to the sides of the quilt top.
·
Press toward the border.
·
Measure from left to right sides of the quilt
top across the middle.
·
Cut (2) lengths of this measurement from the
remaining Border #2 strip.
·
Attach to the top and bottom of the quilt top.
Note*: When you
measure the middle of your quilt, it helps to block the quilt to a uniform
size.
