"Amor" - Desperate Housewife's Quilt

Late last year, Quilt Jane of "Want It, Need It, Quilt" asked me to design a block for her 50 week adventures of "The Desperate Housewife's Quilt". Because my week would fall around Valentine's Day, I knew exactly what block would tickle the fancy of any "Desperate Housewife"!!

So here we go -- the "Amor" Block.

I pulled out several fat quarters from my stash and cut out a couple of samplers. For each block, I used 6 different floral pinks and 1 background color:

From Background:

(4) 1 1/2" squares -- draw a light diagonal line on each.
(1) 2 1/2" square

From the 6 pink colors:

Color A -

(1) 2 1/2" square

Color B
(1) 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip

(1) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip

Color C

(1) 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" strip

(1) 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip

Color D

(1) 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip

(1) 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip

Color E

(1) 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strip

(1) 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip

Color F

(2) 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips

Starting with the 2 1/2" square (Color A), join the strips (Colors B - E) using the pictures as your guide until the unit is 6 1/2" square (unfinished).

Add the 1 1/2" squares to the top right and left of each of the two 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips (Color F), sewing on the diagonal line, cut away the excess, flip the corner and press to complete 2 units. Using the picture as your guide, add the 2 units to the top and left side, with the 2 1/2" background square in the corner.

As many of you know (because I have whined a few times), my sewing machine has been in the shop for a few weeks. One of the advantages, my sewing room is very clean, all the fabric is stacked so neatly and I have been playing with EQ -- and actually getting better at it!

Below is the block and 5 different ways to set these simple little blocks. I am sure when my sewing machine comes home, I will make several of these blocks and maybe have something by next Valentine's Day - 2013.

Palette Challenge

January Color Palette Challenge for me was "artsy". I needed something small for an area in my newly remodeled master bath. The quilting of the top came to an abrupt end when I was almost finished, when my sewing machine gave up. She has been in the shop since then and I truly miss her. My handy backup is great for piecing -- but nothing more.

Thanks to Judy, Patchwork Times and Vicki, Field Trips in Fiber who have challenged their readers -- I am looking forward to February -- another "artsy" top(?). We will see.

Monday Design Wall - BOM Progress

This has been a challenging couple of weeks for me -- with my favorite sewing machine in the shop, I have been going through withdrawals, then sadness, then cleaning (watching too much of the hoarder shows). I did manage to finish the January BOM at the very top above, designed by Quilt Dad, but had to rip -- when you change machines, always test your 1/4" first. Thanks to Jackie at Canton Village Quilt Works, this is the perfect little BOM for using a Layer Cake.

Vintage Block #1

Tuesday, I showed an old block from my Great-grandmother's stash. Here is the block re-created in EQ. If I find the official name for the block, I will come back and update this post.

My main sewing machine will be in the shop a little longer, so I am still going through boxes and cleaning out my room. There are so many projects that I would like to work on, but they will have to wait. If I start getting withdrawals, I can always sew on the spare -- just not as much fun.

Vintage Blocks

While my sewing machine is in the shop, I have been cleaning my sewing room and visiting some of the vintage blocks left behind by my Great Grandmother Mary, "Granny". I was 13 when she died (in her 80's), however I was very blessed to have inherited her love for quilting. As a child, I remember her always sewing (by hand). In her later years, the quilt tops accumulated and then passed on to her oldest daughter (my grandmother) for finishing.

Many of the quilts tops finished were given to family members over the years. Following my grandmother's passing, my sister Phyllis and I now have several of those unfinished tops and blocks ready for assembly. Some are beyond use and very fragile -- mostly because the fabric came from worn clothing. What better use of these treasurers? Inspiration for new quilts.

I love the little block above made from shirtings and gingham. Looks like something else loved it too as a snack. Using EQ, I have sketched the block and will save for a special quilt in the future.
The partially made block above must have been a practice block. All hand-pieced, this scrappy block was used many times in Granny's finished quilts -- if only someone had thought to take pictures of them before giving them away.

Although I have already set up one of my spare sewing machines, I have been enjoying this time visiting these old blocks -- not to mention a cleaner space.

Monday Design Wall - January Color Challenge

A couple of months ago, we redid our master bathroom shower. We now have fresh painted walls -- NO MORE WALL PAPER!!! I have yet to hang anything, not wishing to have holes in the wall. Judy at Patchwork Times and Vicki at Field Trips in Fiber have teamed up for a 2012 Color Palette Challenge. I am working on a small little artsy quilt for one of the master bath walls. The blocks will finish at 4 1/2". Although the lighting in my room is a little off, every color in the palette has been used, plus one light neutral. I am undecided on a border -- so time will tell.

Most of us can label our quilting style by now. I am a piecer -- I love cutting fabric up into pieces and sewing them back together. Not "thrilled" with paper-piecing, not "good" with applique'. Let me clarify -- my fingers are not good with hand applique' -- practice does not always make perfect -- it makes sore joints. I have also tried iron-on applique', but not happy with the stiffness.

Recently I decided to try a simple "Starch Applique", which was graciously shared by Natalia Bonner at Piece N Quilt. Let me just say, this girl has it going!!! Natalie is a young mother and wife, a long-arm quilter, pattern designer etc, etc, etc! I love her method of using starch. It washes out, making the quilt so snugly and soft.

I have been enjoying a three-day weekend, which is almost over. DH and DS are hunting -- ahhh quiet -- so I am heading back to sewing, but first I need to check out other design walls at Patchwork Times.

ORCA Bay -- Units Done

Another holiday with Bonnie Hunter has come and gone. Orca Bay is coming to an end and I know that I will be happy with the finished quilt. I used aqua blues, orange reds and black/whites -- for the border units, used the same white print fabric -- there was no room on the wall to show the border units. As soon as the rows are labeled, everything comes down and will be stacked for sewing later. Whew!

Blogger's BOM - All Caught Up

All ready for January 25th -- when the next BOM goes live! The most recent pair, all the way on top is from Pat Sloan -- love it! Now I wait patiently for the next BOM from John over at Quilt Dad. I am so glad I started this -- it is a nice slow pace to keep up with in-between all the busy work.

Quilting to Heal, Quilts for Healing (Get Kleenex)

July 11, 2011 --- Just a short 6 months ago today -- Miss Marie, the family Matriarch left behind her husband of over 60 years, three sons, and four daughters. One of her daughters, Barbara (below) began a mission -- healing her broken heart, and helping to heal those close.

Taking her mom's clothing (and some of her Dad's), Barbara cut squares of cottons and knits; new and old; and stained from life's Journey. Her goal, to make NINE !!!, no, it is not a typo, NINE!!! quilts for her Dad, 3 brothers, 3 sisters and her mom's sister -- and of course herself -- all by Christmas. Was she crazy? No, she just needed to fill this large missing "piece" -- how else, but to "piece" together NINE Healing Quilts.

Did Barbara make her Goal of NINE quilts by Christmas Eve? Before I answer that, did I mention she did not know how to sew??? Did I mention she did not own a sewing machine???

Where does "one" start? Well -- the stars begin lining up -- Her sister-in-law Marie is a quilter, ok, "first base" has been achieved. SIL Marie loans her a cutting mat, rotary cutter, several tips to get started and a little sewing time on SIL's machine. "Second Base" -- Barbara treats herself to a little sewing machine of her own, thread and a walking foot. "Third Base" -- Barbara makes NINE tops, NINE backs, and sandwiches each on the living room floor. Tears! Broken Thread! Needle Problems! Late Nights! More Tears!

Then, in exchange for grilled steaks made by Barbara's hubby Lynn (YUUUUM), I headed to their home to give a quicky lesson on machine quilting using the walking foot.

Again, do you think Barbara hit the "Home Run"??? The quilt above and at the top -- is #9, which is for her Aunt. The quilt below -- #1 (Barbara's), is the one I took home and quilted it especially for her.

Now ... about those other quilts: #2 - #8! All were Delivered Christmas Eve at their Family gathering. HOME RUN!!!

With not a dry eye in the room, Barbara presented each with a memory of their mom. Each quilt, SEVEN blocks across (July) and ELEVEN blocks down (11th of July). Each with the family names and birthdates embroidered by a very close friend. Each with a lock of hair tucked in a shirt-pocket from their mom.

I cannot begin to explain how proud her mom must be of her. I can only assume, she sat by Barbara's side cheering her on, supporting the need for her to finish this mission. Of course, Barbara will continue to miss her mom, but each day will become easier.

Blogger's BOM - December Done

I now have September, October and November (on top row) done. This is a great little project to fit in between piecing -- i.e., a leader and ender project for the Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt and my "Dance of the Tiger" that I am still working on. This BOM project is hosted by Jackie with Canton Village Quilt Works. The November block was designed by Stephanie at Loft Creations, with directions on her site. I only have Pat Sloan's December BOM left and then I will be caught up.

Monday Design Wall -- Slow Piecing Week

October BOM - DONE! I am a late starter in the BOM hosted by Jackie at Canton Village -- but here is Block 2. Vicki, with Field Trips in Fiber designed the above block -- so cute and simple. I am using a layer cake from Moda, Basic Grey/Origins and making 2 blocks each month. Of course, I still need to make November and December to catch up -- January will be posting on the 25th.

Finished quilting my sister's project Sunday -- Phyllis is such a great piecer -- everything is so precise!

Here is a "surprise" project that I finished a couple of weeks ago -- HOWEVER I need to be careful and not be in too much of a hurry, notice the safety pin below. Apparently, while passing the lint brush, I discovered a missed area. Good thing I caught before shipping it off to Amy.

I love reproduction fabric -- which you will see again and maybe again yet. I have enough for at least 3 more quilts. This one (no name yet) will be sent to it's new home in Houston, with an unveiling later on.

It's late, and I won't be sewing tonight -- so I need to rush over to Judy's at Patchwork Times and link up with the rest of Monday Design Walls. AND -- I just read that Judy will be receiving a shipment of her newest book, 60 Pieced Borders very soon. I am so glad I pre-ordered, because my autographed book will be arriving here very soon. CAN'T WAIT!!!!

WIP - Blogger's Block of the Month

Jackie, from Canton Quilt Works is hosting a Blogger's Block of the Month! Each month a guest will introduce a new block -- the first by Sherri, of A Quilting Life was published in September 2011.

Last year, I received a Basic Grey/Origins Layer Cake (Moda) as a gift. I have been holding these beauties for just the right project. The BOM is 8", so I will make 2 of each. I only have 3 months to catch up before the next block is introduced.

Other WIP -- The holidays are over, so I am also back to quilting tops -- my goal is to at least finish the 2011 Monochromatic Tops from the challenge hosted by Judy, at Patchwork Times. I did a project for every month, but quilting them as been the real challenge -- not enough hours in a day.

Dance of the Tiger - Part III, Setting Triangles and Corners

All the setting triangles are pieced and the four pieced corners. The instructions for both are below. Later this month after I assemble all the blocks and come back for the borders -- of course, there is tiger fabric and a beautiful purple. For the other Parts and Progress, visit here.

For the 10 (ten) setting triangles and 4 (four) corners, you will need to cut 66 half square triangles -- I cut from 2 1/2" strips of the background fabric.

For the framing -- you will need 28 - half triangles cut from 1 1/2" strips of background (if using the easy angle).

Using the above diagram, make 10 sets of framing strips. The black strips are 1 1/2" x 10 1/2". The square is 1 1/2" (you will need 10).

The pieced triangles are made from 6 purple 2 1/2" squares, 4 background 2 1/2" squares and 5 half square triangles from the 2 1/2" strips (see above for cutting).

Frame each of the 10 triangles.

For the pieced corners, cut 4 (four) quarter triangles from 1 1/2" strips (I used the Companion ruler).

Above is a corner unit -- 3 purple squares (2 1/2"), 1 background (2 1/2"), 4 half square triangles, 1 quarter square triangle. The framing unit is only on one side, made from 1 - 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" black strip with 2 half square triangles cut from the 1 1/2" strips. Need four.

Monday Design Wall - Orca Bay Progress

I am running late for the Monday Design Wall link with Judy at Patchwork Times and the Orca Bay link with Bonnie at Quiltville -- but not too late. I have several pieces done, but need to sew more components before putting them on the wall. I used aqua blues and orange/reds. Most of this has been done as leaders/enders to other projects ...... and in between quilting tops. I am very partial to scrappy and my favorite color is red - so naturally, I love this one.

For those following me on the "Dance of the Tiger", I will post the instructions to the triangle setting blocks and the four corners tomorrow. Tiger is no longer on the design wall and is ready for assembly later in the month. I have the inner borders all picked out -- a Tiger print of course, and a beautiful purple.

"ROOOOOAAAAR" says the Tiger

Dance with the Tiger is approaching the final steps. The 10 triangle setting blocks are done. The four corners are remaining and they will also be pieced. My little sister Phyllis is also busy with a new baby quilt. It is amazing how a simple little snowball can come alive with bright fabrics and solid black cornerstones.

Dance of the Tiger - Part II, Block 2 Done

Continuing on, the six 25-patch blocks are framed and done. The pieced setting triangles are ready to go and should be all done by next Tuesday when I post the instructions.

This weekend marks the end of a good year. With 2012, change "will-be-a-happening"!. I will be finally purchasing the mid-arm machine I have longed for -- making room for the machine has been a challenge. My sewing room will now expand to two rooms. Thank goodness for 4 bedrooms.

Another big change -- I am embarking on the world of designing quilt patterns. How Fun is THAT! Have you seen the Black Cat Creations tag on the top right of my page? Dance of the Tiger - Part II, Block 2

The next block starts with a 25-patch. 5-2 1/2" squares across, 5-2 1/2" squares down, alternating with background and purples as above. Cut strips of purple and background 2 1/2" x WOF (or from scraps like I did). My strips were at least 11" long so I could spread the different colors around.
The units pictured above starts with purple and ends with purple -- you need 12 of these units.

Another unit starting with background and ending with background is needed -- total of 18 needed.
Because I used scraps -- after sewing the units, I spread them on the design wall to avoid same fabric squares close to each other. Then, I pulled them from the wall and sewed them together.
Above is a picture of the back of the 25-patch -- notice the layout -- background squares are in the four corners.
Next, cut 24 - 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" black strips to frame the 25-patch blocks. For the cornerstones, cut 24 - 1 1/2" squares from left-over strips.

Sew the frames to the block as pictured above.

Above is the start of two finished Block 2's -- can you see the secondary star forming -- totally by accident. By the end of the week, I should have the other four done. Next Tuesday, I will have the pieced setting triangles -- more purple and background squares. Monday Design Wall and ORCA Blocks

Oh how I wish for just one more week off. I am almost finished quilting a top and need a little time for binding. I am almost finished Step 5 of Bonnie's Orca Bay Mystery and have a good start on Step 6 -- a couple more days off would catch me up completely. But alas -- not gonna happen.

Not to mention, progress on my "Dance with the Tiger" below is coming along. The setting blocks are ALMOST done (a little peek of the 25-patch blocks below) ... I will share Step 2, Block 2 tomorrow for those who are interested. Step 1, Block 1 instructions are here. After all the blocks are done, I will label the rows and remove from the wall for assembly and quilting later-- this quilt is not due until the end of February.

Not to waste my last day off, I have left-overs for lunch and supper. No shopping, no housework, just sewing -- well maybe a little housework -- and a little blog surfing to see what others are up to.

Dance of the Tiger - Part I, Done

Started with 12 - 4 1/2" Purple squares on Monday. By the end of the week, I am done with the the 12 blocks for Part I. I am still quilting a top -- but need to take a break every so often to rest my shoulders, so this is the perfect diversion. "Dance of the Tiger" is due at the end of February -- so I still have time.

If you enlarge the picture above, you will see the Tiger Fabric which will be used as one of the inner borders.

Dance of the Tiger - Part I, Progress

Dance of the Tiger - Part I, Block 1

No, there is no Tiger Picture....but my little brother "Tiger" came to mind when I was pulling the fabric together for this quilt .... and you know that I like to name my quilts after family. For now, I am playing with this block and a setting. I have in mind using a second block using more scraps of purple, however the design will evolve on the wall, so let's see where this takes me.

Yesterday, I showed you the 12 - 4 1/2" scrappy squares from my purple stash. Above, I cut 2 1/2" strips of 1 background (off white), 2 yellow, and 1 green.

Stacking the four strips - I used the Companion Angle Ruler to cut four sets of triangles.

Make four, hour glasses for each block using the triangles, set as above.

The four hour glasses will surround the 4 1/2" purple square -- but you are not done yet with the hour glass units.
From the background fabric (off-white), cut 4 - 4 1/2" squares from 4 1/2" WOF strips.

From black accent fabric, cut 8 - 2 1/2" squares and 4 - 3 1/2" squares.

Draw two diagonal lines on each of the 3 1/2" black units --- one corner to corner diagonal, the other 3/8" apart. Sew on both lines, cut in between, open and press.

The four larger units (4 1/2") will be used for the block -- save the HST's for later.

Here is the placement of the 4 units you just finished above. Now let's go back to the hour glass units -- for another step.

On the 8 - 2 1/2" black accent squares, draw 2 diagonal lines, one corner to corner, the other 3/8" apart. Place one 2 1/2" squares on the bottom right, sew both lines, cut in between lines, open and press. Place the second 2 1/2" square on the bottom left, sew both lines, cut, open and press. Save those units you cut away for other projects.

Here is the final layout of the block ready to be sewn together. I am making this quilt with 12 of these blocks (using scrappy purple centers) -- so there are 11 to go.

Monday Design Wall and ORCA Update

My Design Wall will soon be full of a new project. Above are 12 - 4 1/2" purple squares, which will be the center of the blocks. I designed this block a while back and no longer have the project - so it is time to make another and share.

I am also busy quilting a top on my Janome and turning to the left every so often and piecing on my little Singer. It is so much fun! I am on vacation until after Christmas, so it is SEW-SEW-SEW!
And -- here is the progress on the ORCA Bay Mystery Quilt hosted by Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville. Steps, 1, 2, 3 and 4 are done! Step 5 is half way done and almost ready for Step 6 this Friday.

Monday Design Wall - Orca Progress

It's Christmas, and some of my design wall will have to wait until after the Holidays, but I am taking pictures for later. As for my progress on the ORCA Mystery, Parts I, II, III and almost IV are done. I have used blues in the aqua family and my reds are orange-reds. AND, in keeping with Bonnie Hunter's methods, I have used more of my white "2000 fabric". Using the ORCA Mystery as my "leaders and enders" for my special projects has helped me stay focused with the finish line in site for holiday gifts.

Have you picked your Christmas Present Yet???? I have, and it is ordered. The new Judy Laquidara Quilt Book, "60-Pieced Quilt Borders" will be coming out very soon and I have pre-ordered mine.

Guild Challenge Finish

Last Friday, we had our annual guild Christmas Party. It was so nice to be able to visit and meet new quilters. I don't get to go very often to the meetings because of my job, however I try to always make to special dates.

Within the group, we have little bees and challenges. Each year a fabric is chosen which we buy and challenge ourselves to make a quilt-type project. The project is then revealed at the Christmas Party. Here is mine -- all done, finished at 60 x 60. And the back below, where I used up the orphan blocks made from the scraps HST's. Because I used a very simple pattern with large blocks -- I feather quilted all over.

It is not too late for me to link up at Sarah's "Confessions of a Fabric Addict", so I am heading over there right now.

VERY IMPORTANT -- Judy Laquidera has opened pre-orders for her new quilt book, "Sixty Pieced Quilt Borders". My Christmas present is now ordered!!!!

Blk/White, Orca, Quilting

The above quilt has a very sentimental story .... made with the clothing of a loved one lost. A co-worker Barbara wanted to make quilts for her family from her mom's clothing, A TOTAL OF NINE! Barbara had never quilted - in fact - she did not own a sewing machine. With pure determination and the need to heal broken hearts, she bought a sewing machine, made all of the tops and the backings.

As of this weekend, she had already finished quilting the first top using her new walking foot. To help her, I offered to quilt the one she made for herself -- what an honor. After the holidays and after she has gifted each to her family, I will share more of this heart-warming story.

A few years ago, I designed this 18" sample block which was never used after I "tweaked" the final block. While looking for black and white scraps for the ORCA Mystery, I found it -- JUST IN TIME. I finished it as a little topper and will reveal later this week as part of the November Monochromatic Challenge at Patchwork Times. I had totally forgot about the final block and the lovely quilt it made -- one of which I will just have to re-make and share in 2012.

The above progress represents Steps 1 and 2 in the ORCA Mystery Challenge hosted by Bonnie Hunter. I have cut out step #3 and finished around 50. I truly believe a mystery quilt is one of my favorite projects -- I actually have a hard time sleeping on Thursday night waiting for the next clue. With everything going on -- how in the world could I fit this in -- what's a couple hours less sleep.

Monday Design Wall - Quilting Tops and Orca Bay

My Design Wall has 2 projects I can't share, but here is the first step for the 2011 Bonnie Hunter Mystery, Orca. As soon as I have 10 done, they are safety pinned. I now have 200 done and will start piecing again after I finish quilting the table topper below. My mystery is also my "Leader/Ender" for my Christmas Projects.

I return to work today after a week off -- a little disappointed that I did not finish the Table Topper. My plan now is to finish by tomorrow night and hand sew the binding Wednesday.

And .... because I have started the 2011 Mystery, I HAVE TO QUILT and finish 2010 RRCB. I have ironed out the creases (after it was folded for months) and have it ready for sandwiching. I have more vacation around the holidays and will finish this for my bed.

On the wall -- two projects I will reveal after the holidays -- my family watches my blog!

Looking Back - First Quilt

Over at Bonnie Hunter (a.k.a. Quiltville Fame), she has taken us on a look back to our first quilts. This is the first quilt I started and finished on my own - over several years. While living with my grandparents in the Summer of 1974 at the age of 18, I was surrounded by quilts in different stages.

Helping my grandmother finish quilts left by her mother was my start. However, she had this big box of plaid scraps, some cut from a couple of old shirts from my grandfather. I cut a template and carefully drew squares on all the scraps, cutting them out with a pair of scissors. The center was sewn and boxed away. Years passed -- a job, finishing school, marriage and a son later, the box was found, borders added -- even my first attempt at applique -- and hand quilted. It is still one of my favorites.

Monday Design Wall - Table Cover

Piecing for the back is almost done -- I guess it is the camera -- the green in the top right is not as dark as the picture. I have one more quilt top to finish, then I will be quilting for the rest of the week.
The finished top is 60 x 60. Using a very traditional block, enlarged to 8" sections, a 2" inner border and 8" outside border.

Quick Project - Thanksgiving Table Topper

Green Monochromatic - Finished!

Not only is the Green Monochromatic Challenge Quilt Finished, it has been presented to a very special young lady under treatment for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
The back of the quilt was made with signature blocks of all her co-workers, who continue to admire her bravery during the last few months of treatment. Enough blocks were left for her family and those close at M.D. Anderson's Hospital in Houston.

Each block measures just 4 1/2" -- using 2" strips and 5" squares in between the 9-patches. A smaller quilt of 65 x 73, it is just right to travel and snuggle on the sofa.

Although I did not finish the quilt in time to link up at Patchwork Times for the Green Monochromatic Challenge, I will party with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

Blogger's Quilt Festival

My Entry to Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival --- this Indigo Geometric Quilt combining traditional and modern. The quilt was designed right on the wall -- which is my favorite method for designing. Because of all the large spaces, I spent extra time on the quilting design.

The Quilt was inspired by the 2011 Monochromatic Challenge hosted by Judy at Patchwork Times. Although I have a Long-Arm on my wish list, all of the quilting has been done on my home machine.

Now it is time for all of us to head to Amy's Creative Side and visit all of the other entries -- HAVE FUN!

Monday Design Wall -- Scraps!

Every project I work on generates SCRAPS! Does that happen to everyone? Above is a box of 2 1/2" squares I received from Martha a few Christmas parties ago. I have used many and added many along the way.

I have a "special project" of many-many deep blues/navy which generated an abundance of scraps. I cut more 2 1/2" squares and ended up with enough to make sashing stars. And ..... notice the 1996 Moda Fabric by Deb Strain which has been fermenting (like a good wine). I still had 3 yards.

While making the blue/tan quilt, I used the 2 1/2" squares of many colors for "leaders and enders" (credit to Bonnie Hunter / Quiltville). Although I cannot yet show the blue/tan, I can show off the scrappy quilt.

Green Monochromatic - Peace!

All the piecing is done and the border is chosen. The soft greens are highlighted with whimsical peace signs. I picked up 6 yards of this fabric with a monthly coupon and wish I had picked up the whole bolt. I am already quilting this sweet little top and will be sad to see it go.

Flash Back - 2001 Quilt

Quick story -- Every Christmas Eve, those employees who come in to work are given the chance to win a quilt. I have been doing this for several years and enjoy looking back at my fabric choices, the pattern and the quilting style -- which was my machine "stitch-in-the-ditch" phase. The owner of this quilt, Sheila brought it in to have a little rip repaired on the back.

Would you believe, I found the scraps from the pieced backing that I used to make the repair.

Even as far back as 2001, I loved piecing the backs -- and if you look close, the binding is pieced too.

Monday Design Wall and a Finish

The church quilt is done and on its way to Eagle Lake, Texas. I loved making this quilt -- the fall colors all worked so well together, even though they came from several different collections.

I don't make wine or cheese, however I believe that aging is needed. Well ..... my fabric never goes out of style, each piece ages gracefully and gets better with time. Both quilts shown today have a few pieces from new and old stashes.

My Green Monochromatic is actually 99% done, however I thought I would show the stages as it was growing. Sorta of a teaser -- not really, but since it is so simple, I thought I would stretch out the reveal and show how I design directly on the wall.

And since I just came home from work (long day!), I am now jumping over to Judy's Patchwork Times to see what other design wall are waiting to visit.

Still Quilting Tops

Here is the Church Fair Quilt -- I will show you the finished job on Friday.

I used feathers for the center blocks and changed up in the four corners. The borders are feathers again -- of course my favorite.

A peep at the backing. Still waiting in line -- the Red and Pink Monochromatics, the RRCB (Bonnie Hunter's Mystery) and in the side lines, an "almost" finished green monochromatic. I will soon catch up and start piecing again -- and yes, my posting will soon be regular again.

If only all the ideas in my head can make it to the machine -- but then, aren't we all like this!

AND....a very special Happy Birthday to both my sister Rayna and her hubby Norman AND ... Happy Wedding Anniversary! I wonder if they planned those dates!

Pink Monochromatic

With October right around the corner, I have finished the Pink Monochromatic top except for the border. Judy over at Patchwork Times is our host for this great challenge that I am determined to finish even though I am a little behind. This quilt will be donated for a fund raiser to Breast Awareness --- and just happens to be a repeat of the Violet/Purple Quilt I made a few months ago. Those Chubby pinwheels are habit forming.

On the quilting table, I have the Church Quilt, next is the Blue Monochromatic, then I will quilt the Pink -- did I mention that I still have not quilted the last Bonnie Hunter's RRCB Mystery Quilt. AND -- I can't wait to start the Green Monochromatic!

Monday Design Wall - Red

Church Fair Quilt - Top is Done

What a Week! Tropical Storm Lee came through and slowed up progress. However, I am done with the top. Before pulling off the wall to join all the corner units to the center and borders, I snapped this picture. The top is now laid out on the bed waiting to be sandwiched tonight.

Rackm' - Stackm' - Sew

Many quilters have their own method of power sewing. I am no different. We all need a way to complete projects faster and efficiently. Most of us have this little "anal" voice deep inside, we just need to concentrate and draw "it" out. Bonnie Hunter, with Quiltville fame, has to be the Queen of power sewing. She shares her methods in patterns, books and of course her website.

Here is my favorite power sewing method, Rackm' - Stackm' - Sew.

From the design wall, I label each column with a number (sometimes I label rows). Junk mail is my favorite source of making labels -- and a stick pin.

Starting from the top, stack them -- all of them, first by columns, then combine them into one or two stacks.

Above is my Blue blocks all stacked and ready for power sewing. Because this top is on-point, I pin the inset triangles to the first and last block -- I have learned, those little boogers are the first to get sewn on wrong if you are not concentrating. (Sorry, I have no idea why the picture loads upside down!)

I leave the stacks in the box as I pull them out to join. They won't get out of order or easily knocked over. This is the perfect time to use them as "Leaders and Enders" (source: Bonnie Hunter, Quiltville). They store nicely in case you have to set the project aside. I have also collected plastic boxes for the larger blocks.

Above are a few columns all sewn from my red top. Next step is to sew the columns together. Now here is my secret to the "snuggle" joining. We are taught to press the seams in one direction, which helps the joining seams "snuggle" and match nicely. Because I have this little anal voice telling me to "snuggle" -- this is important --- I PRESS ODD NUMBERED COLUMNS TOWARDS THE TOP, AND PRESS EVEN NUMBERED COLUMNS TOWARDS THE BOTTOM! If you make up these little rules (your own little rules) and consistently use them, they become habit.

Indigo - Finished!

The Monochromatic Challenge, hosted by Judy at Patchwork Times is moving along. The Indigo is now finished. I loved quilting this one! There are all these open spaces to go crazy with feathers. For the medium floral sections, kept the feathers simple since they would not show.

Although looking at this, there seems to be only three fabrics used, indigo, medium floral and white -- actually, there are five. The real reason was that I did not have enough of one indigo. However as a scrappy quilter, it logically needed more variety.

And the back -- a simple floral.

"GO TO" Pattern - Part 2

Here is my Short Stack System -- the plastic drawers are around 13 x 13.

I stash the Short Stack pieces, by Black Cat Creations, in each of the drawers, then when I have enough of one theme (or color like this one) they are arranged on the design wall, labeled by rows and each block is stored between paper towels until I need them (open drawer on the left) -- even the borders are cut.

The one above was cut out last year and stored for later assembly -- almost done.

Phyllis and her granddaughter Alexis started working on this one last week.

And lastly -- here is another one I made for my husband, Christmas 2009. I guess it is obvious this is one of my favorite "GO TO" Patterns -- so what is yours?

My "GO TO" Pattern!

Asking around .... I believe several quilters have a "GO TO" pattern. You know, the pattern which can be made into a striking top when you need a gift. I have a few favorites, however my all time favorite is "Short Stacks", by Black Cat Creations. Between my sister Phyllis and I, we have made over 20.

The pink/black/green variation has been made four times -- above are my two great nieces modeling their matching bed covers. This color style works for older girls also -- the other two were made for teenage nieces.

The one above is a favorite, now owned by my niece Missy -- all Black and Whites. We have made 2 in these colors.

This one was made by sister Phyllis for her husband using a variety of sailing fabrics. The outside border came from our grandmother's stash and was dated 1987 -- perfect.

The oriental is on Phyllis's KING SIZE BED! This one was a whopper. Again, we have made several using the oriental fabrics.

Although I can't show all of the Scrappy Short Stacks, the one above is ready for gifting. We have a system of cutting larger scraps into the Short Stack sizes and storing them away for later. Tomorrow I will show you the system and two more "SS" Phyllis is working on.

Now ... the cool part ..... in case you are wondering why I have decided to share my favorite "GO TO" pattern. On Saturday, while volunteering at the Quilting Niche for their annual Shop Hop, I met one of the owners of Black Cat Creations -- Amy Cotham!!!!!! It is a small world! Amy has also started a blog -- be sure to hop over and sign up to follow her. Quilt Surgery - My Way

A friend brought me this quilt for help. Susan had purchased it several years ago on a vacation to the East Coast....lots of piecing and hand quilted. The hand quilting was done about 10" apart using large quick stitching. Lovingly used and washed, all of the 2" patches shriveled, several seams separated and some patches even shredded.

I counted no less than 25 areas the sewing had come undone and much more weakened seams. I had two options, hand mend each 2" block and patch over those shredded. OR ... undo all of the hand quilting and work with just the top.

As you can see, I started from scratch and undid all of the hand quilting -- that was a several months ago. I washed, dried and pressed the backing to remove the creases from stitching. Next, pressed the top being very careful not to stretch the bias pieced border. WHEW! --- that was a few months ago. Since then, I have pulled from my stash and tried to match the shredded 2" blocks, replacing several -- a few at a time. Next, I have started resewing all of the open and weak seams.

Almost done, now comes the decision to hand quilt or machine quilt. If I choose to hand quilt, she may not see this quilt for another year. The quilt is not an antique, so the choice will be to machine quilt .... something close together to bind the small patches and give Susan many more years of use .... keeping in tack the memories of one of her special vacations.

Is this truly quilt surgery? a little nip-tuck? or a major plastic surgery makeover? Don't look for the answers too soon, I still have a long way to go.

Quilting with Home Machine - My Way

Above is my Indigo Monochromatic top being quilted. For this design, I doodled on scrap paper, cut a template for a curve and used a medicine bottle cap for tracing a circle. I only traced the circle, the square in the middle and the curve -- all the feathers are free-hand.

First, I use x-large garden gloves with the little rubber bumps. They grip great and they go on/off real easy. Mine came from a local dollar store.
I also made my own sewing machine "drop-in" about 12 years ago and it is the greatest thing for home machine quilting. You need a flat space to work with -- larger than the small sewing machine area. This is a link to the "drop-in" -- if you check it out, notice how worn out it is!
Next, I use lots of safety pins -- all sizes (I am not a pin snob). I have a utility table (30 x 72 -- the top is about 3/4" thick) that stays at the end of my king size bed. I sandwich on the bed then my DH helps me slide the quilt over to the table.
I clip the quilt on the table with big paper binding clips. Big enough to get around the table. I am careful to stretch the backing and always start in the middle. After pinning all around the table, I shift the pin the sides, constantly making sure the backing is very tight.
To make the table taller (I am 5'7"), I added plumbers 10" PVC pipe on the legs.
A BIG step ... always pass your batting through the dryer with a small wet towel and NO BOUNCE -- you WANT the static cling!!! As you sandwich on the bed, additional static will build up while you are smoothing the layers. One of my friends uses a little wisk broom to smooth the layers.
Never roll your quilt -- always make sure it is loose on the table and able to slide around. I have also waxed the table top using spray starch. Go figure!
I practice a LOT of doodling with pen and paper. Junk mail has a purpose in my house.
Start small -- we have 2 cats, so I have made several 30 x 30 quilts for them to sleep on. I change them out constantly and throw them in the washer/dryer often. As your confidence builds, so will the size of your quilts.
Don't worry if you have a few tucks in the beginning. Keep a ripper close by and check the back often to catch the tucks as soon as possible. If you need to, re-position the safety pins after smoothing. When I first started, I also stitched in the ditch to hold everything together about 10 - 12" apart -- for example, around the big blocks, then went back and doodled all over the place.
Try and keep your stitches even. In the beginning, it will be hard -- but try this: Keep the "pace" in your head with counting techniques. 1-2-3, 1-2-3 -- like learning to dance. The rhythmic counting helps to stay focused. Also watch out for those curves. When you are driving a car and coming around a curve, you tend to slow down on the approach, then speed up going around (especially when you are familiar with the road -- admit it -- you do!).
Keep a sketch book of favorite doodles. I have also taken pictures of beautiful wall paper for inspiration. My I-phone is full.
My way is not the only way. Different does not mean wrong -- just different.
Can I do anything a long-armer can do? Probably not, but I like to try.
Do I want a mid or long-arm -- you betcha! One Day!

Update on the Blue Borders

Playing around with the border on the Blue Monochromatic -- I think this will do. I would like to make another one with this setting using bright batiks (not anytime soon). Trying to stay organized, I am writing the instructions along the way, documenting the steps with pictures. Later this year, I should have a few patterns to share. On the other side of the room, I am still quilting the Indigo Monochromatic with hopes of finishing soon so I can start the binding.

Next project -- using a sticky roller to clean off the threads on the design wall!!!!!!

Monday Design Wall - Pieced Border

The August color is pink for Judy's Monochromatic Challenge, so I need to hurry and finish the blocks for the blue --- I need an empty design wall. Here is the top coming together with a pieced border. All the blocks are 5 1/2" and if you notice, I am using 5 1/2" white squares for the corner quarter units (they are blending in to the design wall). This will come in handy when I start quilting.

Quilting the "Indigo" Monochromatic

Woke up early this morning and started quilting the Indigo Top for Judy's Monochromatic Challenge (Patchwork Times) -- of course, it was the color for June. I am working on the white areas in the middle and will change the thread for the dark indigo. If I can finish quilting this top, I will start piecing again -- it has been awhile and I am missing it. I have one more deadline quilt for a Church Fair that I cannot wait to start on. The fabric is beautiful and the pattern in my head will be perfect.

Another "Saintly" Finish

The Black and Gold Quilt is done! And .... just in time for football season. This "Saintly" Finish will be gifted to a retiring employee in our department at work. The colors are very rich and the quilting is done in gold thread.

Monday Design Wall -- Blue Monochromatic

The Monochromatic Challenge for July was blue over at Patchwork Times -- but I have been busy quilting tops and have not done too much on the design wall. I started playing with 5" squares, however nothing is sewn. I thought about keeping July SMALL -- maybe a pillow or two. But I just could not help myself. Looks like this will be another big one. The fabric has snowflakes so I am hoping to finish by Christmas!

Added a few corner pieces -- then I remembered tessellating blocks I made several years ago. I don't have the pattern, so there is lots of playing until things started working.

Then I tried on point -- not really, just turned the camera! I need to quit playing because I REALLY need to finish quilting the top below.

Can you keep a secret??? This Saintly Creation is for a retiring employee, which will be just in time for football season. She already knows a quilt is coming, because I make quilts for those who retire in our department. I will show the whole thing after it is done and gifted.

BQ Quilt - Done!

This cute little quilt top made by my sister Phyllis, is from the BQ Pattern, designed by Maple Island Quilts. I quilted the top combining lines, meandering and feathered borders -- so as to keep it "boyish". Phyllis will add a striped binding to match and deliver in time for a new born little boy.

Of course -- keeping with my promise to show the backs from now on -- the pieces are from a stash of 10" squares leftover from this quilt and the "Goose Has Left the Pond" I made last year.

Quilting and Stash Report

I am quilting a little quilt top (60 x 70) for my sister Phyllis . She used the BQ Pattern by Maple Island Quilts. The good news for me, she used up some of my stash for the backing.

Yesterday, Phyllis and I headed north for a Gulf States Quilting Association Meeting. The speaker, Dorinda Evans is a prolific award winning scrap quilter -- WOW, she is an awesome scrapper!!! We brought Phyllis' twelve year old granddaughter Alissa, who made her first quilt at 5. Gulf States has opened their membership to Juniors, so of course we have signed her up. We actually came home with NO new stash. After an inspiring meeting, we were ready to come home and sew.

I also got to meet Donita from DT Quilts. It is so cool to meet the quilters we visit with regularly on line. Be sure to go drop by and tell her hello.

Here is my report:

Choosing the perfect backing can be fun! Really guys! Even if the top is several years down the road and not even a "twinkle" in your eyes. I bought this awful duck fabric years ago, which eventually made it to a very masculine quilt for my husband (his favorite by the way). There was enough left over to make a charity pillowcase, the lining of a purse, and a couple of hot pads.

I tend to buy bulk for backs and save for later. My inventory has a variety of large-piece novelty, classic, masculine and kid prints. When there is a sale, six (6) yards is my favorite length to buy. However .... I have been known to buy whatever is on the bolt (5 to 10 yards). What is the best backing fabric to buy ahead -- good quality, good price, and oh yes, something pleasing to the eye (well ... sorta). Sometimes, the surprise look from the recipient, when they see that crazy fabric on the back is worth the edgy choice.

In general .... nine (9) yards can back a king; six (6) yards can back a queen if you add a filler strip; five to six (5 - 6) yards for twin/double; and three-four (3-4) for small/lap. The Orange Quilt I showed off earlier this week needed an additional 10" strip -- Here is the back below --- I alternated scraps and 10" x 16" rectangles (which were left over after I added the outside border). Although the quilt top was scraps of all shades of orange, the six yards of yellowish gold was a perfect fit.

Below is a little top my sister Phyllis and her granddaughter made last weekend. She inserted a 6" strip to a 1-1/2 yard piece of fabric, which made a very cute backing. Oooops -- I forgot to remove my ugly quilting gloves. Those little quilts are where I try out new free-form quilting designs and practice before moving to my big quilts.

Below is a nine (9) yard piece purchased last year (on sale of course) -- I love this retro print! I will have enough for a large quilt backing one day and still have scraps left over. Any imperfections while quilting will be well hidden.

One of my favorite quilts hanging in our hallway, this "Art Affair" quilt designed by Jan Douglas was made in 2006 (her pattern published in February 2006 McCall's Magazine).

The backing below -- who knows why I bought this one! I am sure it was on sale and bought "just because". It was later used from my stash and it worked!

Sarah, over at Confessions of a Fabric Addict likes to piece her backings incorporating the scraps left over from the tops. I would say her quilts are reversible, because they are gorgeous from both sides. Bonnie Hunter, one of my favorite scrappy girls of the Quiltville fame, has used 10" squares and orphan blocks for her backings -- can I say "L-O-V-E" them!

Now the next time you are digging through the sales, don't look at the fabric to match the perfect quilt top --- think outside the box. Pick something that makes you smile -- the one that pops -- or the onetime fad fabric that may or may not ever come back in style. AND, to the shop owners out there, package those 5-6 yard "gotta-get-rid-of-before-tax-inventory" fabrics into "BACKING" sales and I will see ya there!

From this post forward, I will be always display the pictures of my quilts from both sides (even though they may not be reversible like Sarah's) and even those "YUK" backings! I am challenging others to do the same -- lets see how many different styles are out there. Are you "matchy-matchy", "scrappy", "close-enough" -- or some other style or combination?

Finish - Orange Monochromatic

Patiently waiting for the rain to stop for pictures, I found a little sun. As soon as the picture was taken on the swing, the rain started coming again ..... so the picture below is shadowed.

The finished quilt is 83 x 92, taking 22 bobbins of thread for the custom quilting. The binding is an orange and white stripe for the final touch.

Again, I must give special thanks to Judy Laquidara over at Patchwork Times for her Monochromatic Challenge. I have always liked orange so I had a huge collection of various shades ..... after this quilt, I love orange. I believe it will rest very nicely on the double bed in my son's old room.

Alexis' Quilt

A few weeks ago, I shared a quilt top made by my five year old niece with help from her grandmother (Phyllis). Today, I have been quilting the top -- not much else to do with all the rain.

Alexis sat on my lap and placed her hands on top of my gloved hands to help me quilt -- Worked for a little while, however she is five and found other things to do.

The back of the quilt has the cutest fabric with the number "five" as a theme. Phyllis had the idea that Alexis will always remember when she made this quilt -- perfect choice.

A preview of this week -- more quilting. Phyllis brought three child size quilts, the one above and two more. They are so cute, so I can't wait to start the other two.

I have also started a post all about Backings coming soon. Thanks to my friend Cookie, she gave me the inspiration to talk about how I choose backing fabric. Are you "matchy-matchy", "scrappy", or "close-enough". Do you buy ahead, do you only buy when needed? Most of us are a combination of each -- so stay tuned for "Back to Back" .

Next, I am patiently waiting for the rain to let up so I can take pictures of my Orange Monochromatic Quilt for Judy's challenge at Patchwork Times. It's HUGE! Like ... Queen Size! My favorite monochromatic so far.

Now it is time to hurry over to Sarah's so I can link up to the ''Whoop" end of the week report at "Confessions of a Fabric Addict". I have already visited a few others and see the H2H Challenge is coming together. So glad mine is done and off to Green Fairy's.

Stash Enhancement

My very good friend Mary came down from New York with her hubby Howard. Of course, that meant visiting with quilting friends, shopping and eating out. Howard bought Mary an Accu Cut Go (how sweet was that) at the Quilting Niche'.

Then on Saturday, we went "down the bayou" to a cute little shop in Cut Off, La. called MeMaw's Sewing Room, to visit our quilting friend Leslie. As you can see above, there was lots of stash enhancement. Leslie had a big sale, so 56 yards of backings later, and only $146 spent, I was a happy camper. I picked up several pieces (and bolts) of Westminster and Windham fabrics, for an average of $2.60 per yard.

I am so close to finishing the Orange Quilt (if I would just stay home). It will take me a while to hand sew the binding, however I hope to have it finished by the end of the week for my Friday Finishes.

Orange Monochromatic and Kristy's Dream

Mary Lea brought her version of Kristy's Dream to Show and Tell recently. I still get excited when someone uses my patterns.

And, after a few days of picking out some of the quilting on the Orange Monochromatic top, I am back on the machine. I think I was starting to get withdrawals as I try to sew something everyday. The Orange Monochromatic is for the month of April for Judy's Challenge over at Patchwork Times. The blocks for the Red top are done, but not sewn together and the Indigo top is ready for quilting -- which I will tackle next.

I am so glad July is here -- it is a slower month at work, so I hope to catch up on a few quilt projects, and -- finish writing 2 patterns, pillowcases, three mug rugs -- oh my goodness, the list is just too long to post.

To add to my already busy life, I have recently joined the local Art Guild. Our mom was a painter (oils) and very talented. She did sew (a lot of everything), except quilts -- I guess it sometimes skips one generation. My goal is to one day bring more art to my quilt tops --- I guess we will see.

"The DJ Quilt" for the Fourth of July!

Carolyn finished her "DJ Quilt" just in time for the Fourth of July weekend. A very lucky soldier will be receiving this quilt very soon. Notice the quilting? She does this awesome work on her home machine! Carolyn added a border to the pattern, for her own version -- I guess I will be pulling fabric for my next one soon AND it just may have a border!

Indigo Challenge and H2H Friday

My Indigo Challenge Quilt has not left the wall for some time now. June is one of two busy months for me at work -- so glad July is here. I am off today and on my way to our Guild's workshop for "sit and sew" time with the gals. I will stop off at the Quilt Shop for a border -- I hope she has an Indigo, because it just needs another border.

I will be linking up with Judy at Patchwork Times to show the Indigo after I add the border, and maybe a sneak peak of the quilting. Do you remember the "Orange" quilt? I finished quilting and now I am "picking". I started something new and became better the more I quilted, so I am going back to fix a few areas.

Here is the back of the H2H Quilt -- all quilted, bound, labeled, washed and ready to mail. Special Thanks to Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict for hosting this worthy project and to KatieQ for the fabric exchange.
The simple pattern is from the 2007 "Quilt Pink", in the Better Homes and Gardens, American Patchwork and Quilting. I have made SEVERAL -- let's see --- the Red/White/Black, a Green/White my sister somehow has now, two Orientals, and two Black and Whites. Did I mention that I really like this pattern. AND thank you hubby for helping to stage the quilt.

Show and Tell

A quick little Show and Tell from our local "Cane Cutter Quilt Guild".

Marlene has already finished her "DJ Quilt" above.

Louise's version of the "DJ Quilt" pattern -- this is absolutely adorable. She added the sail boats to the solid blocks! Great adaptation.

Alice finished her "Stars over Scott" top using her large collection of 5" squares, and added to the size with additional HST. Looking forward to seeing this one quilted.

I have more, but will save a few for later.

A Drunkard's Path -- In Memory of Raymond and Lindsey

On June 25th, a memorial run/walk will be held in honor of two young men, Raymond and Lindsey who lost their lives in an alcohol related accident nearly a year ago. The quilt above, will be one of many items raffled to help and educate our community against alcohol and other drug related violence. A portion of the proceeds will also go to establish a Memorial Scholarship on behalf of Raymond and Lindsey. When Lindsey's mom asked me to make a quilt, it did not take me long to think of this design in their favorite colors (green and white). The title "The Only Drunkard Path Belongs in a Quilt" is a testimony of their family's loss.

Special Thanks to The Quilting Niche', for the awesome job of quilting the top with the heavenly stars.

H2H and Indigo Update

The Quilting continues -- on the H2H, a simple all over floral. The H2H is the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge hosted by Sarah, at Confessions of a Fabric Addict. My fabric exchange partner, KatieQ sent me a collection of blues and yellows which fit nicely with my stash.

What a difference a day makes -- if you compare the Indigo Challenge with yesterday's post, you will notice a few changes. I replaced a couple of HST with squares to continue the weave. The best way to catch mistakes or see what doesn't work, is to take a picture. The smaller version helps those little hiccups stand out. The Indigo is part of Judy's Monochromatic Challenge over at Patchwork Times, which has absolutely "stretched" me to try new things. I have continued to use only what is in my stash and design each on the design wall.

Indigo Challenge on Design Wall

I didn't have that much Indigo (only 2 - 1 yard pieces) for Judy's Monochromatic Challenge, so I though it was going to be mixed with lots of white and probably very small. Then I found this OLD indigo/white floral, which looked like a good filler and I had 2 yards. Starting with one block -- a big one, I added 3 more! Each section is 6" so the finished block is 18".

I only had enough of the first Indigo fabric to make the four blocks. Then I pulled the second 1 yard piece and made a small 1" finished border against the 2" white border and to piece the corner units.

The corner units came from a large weaving block found in "The It's Okay If You Sit On My Quilt Book" by Mary Ellen Hopkins.

What started out small is now about 60" square -- I still have a little floral to make a small border, or maybe I will use more white. From the picture, I can already see I want to change a few corner unit pieces and will sew everything together, then decide on the border. The wall may stay like this for a while until I finish quilting a couple of tops.

I am also waiting for the "Drunkard's Path" to come back from the Long Arm Quilter to add binding - then off it goes to raise funds in the memory of two special young men who died in the path of a drunkard driver last July.

Friday Sharing

A few quilts from our local guild workshop. Geralyn and her RWB Beauty! I have seen this pattern somewhere, and attempted to find the name and designer with no luck -- If I find it, I will update. Update: The Pattern is called Saddle Trap and was featured in the McCalls Quick Quilts Magazine, in October/November 2010 Issue. I also found the pattern designer's Blog -- I am now a new fan. Thanks to Anne and Wonky Girl finding the links.

Donna and Alice's strip quilts -- I loved these!

I am so proud -- recognize "The DJ Quilt". Marlene has finished and sandwiched this in record time! If you need a fast masculine quilt -- here is the pattern link. It is in PDF form - but if you are having trouble opening, send me an email (see profile for address) and I will send it to you.

Other ladies were working with this pattern at the workshop, so I hope to show other versions when they are finished. A few are very girly -- so it works for both boys and girls.

Alice is making "Stars over Scott" -- now my head is swelling. This pattern of course is named for my son Scott. Alice used her 5" charm squares, which produces a smaller version -- absolutely perfect.

And here is my project (at least the one I can share) -- it is the back of the Orange Monochromatic Challenge (hosted by Judy of Patchwork Times) I have been quilting on for over a week. If I would just dedicate time to quilting, it would be finished....however I keep getting side tracked with piecing a special little project.

Red Quilt Update

Not finished yet ... however making progress in between other projects. The Monochromatic Challenge hosted by Judy over at Patchwork Times dedicated "Red" for the month of May. The pattern I am using is my favorite "Stars over Scott", which is named after my DS. Here is the original and the pattern. Indigo for June. I have only a few pieces of deep blue indigos, so we may have a small project, which will also allow me to catch up.

Although Fridays are my favorite to display "Finished" projects and linking up with Sarah's Whoop Link Party, I will only have a work in progress. Be sure to visit "Confessions of a Fabric Addict" and see what other quilters are up to today.

It's Official - I'm on the Banner!

Everyday ... I look forward to reading the daily post on Stash Manicure's "Sew We Quilt". I mean, let me say ... Love It! Who would have thought, my "Field of Violets" made the Banner for the month of June with three other Lovelies! I made this quilt as part of Judy Laquidara's Monochromatic Challenge, at Patchwork Times.

For those visiting for the first time -- just a tiny intro --- I have been quilting for several years, a little here and there in my early years. Now I find more time as an empty nester. Look out when I do retire one day. On my "bucket list" is a quilt pattern named for each of my nieces and nephews and maybe one day, grandchildren. I have somewhat made a start -- nothing fancy, I guess everyone needs to start somewhere. Anyone is welcome to use my patterns as I am always flattered when I see them made by someone else.

End of Month Report -- WOW!

What a month! For Judy's Monochromatic Challenge, I just started Red 3 days ago! My favorite color and it was due today. No problem, I am quilting the Orange Quilt first (April's color), next is H2H Blue/Yellow for charity, then the Red quilt below. If I would make them smaller, I probably would get more done. Oh Well. Then, there is the Drunkard's Path ... it is for a fund raiser, however it will be quilted by a long-armer.

The pattern chosen for my Red quilt is "Stars Over Scott". I love this pattern (maybe because it is named for my son :). A little smaller than my original pattern, I started with 10" squares my sister made from a huge collection of our fabric, cutting them down into 5" squares. Same instructions, except the block finishes to 4" square.

On Memorial Day, I headed to Hancock's to buy a box of batting (40% off), with another 10% coupon. I must have ran into a dozen quilty friends. It turns out, Alice and Mary Ann are also making "Stars Over Scott"! Alice is using several colors of reds, greens, blues ... and Mary Ann browns and greens. I can't wait to see them finished and able to share here.

Speaking of sharing -- Cherie over at Quilted Jonquil has made "Kristy's Dream" for her granddaughter, Liliana Sofia (such a sweet baby). My niece Kristy will be so flattered!

On a Blogger Note: Over the weekend, I upgraded to Internet 9 Explorer (I9E). Everything went wacky! I could not publish anything. For those of you having Blogger trouble after upgrading ... I closed out everything, then restarted the internet using Google Chrome and it is working again. Thank Goodness! I started this post Monday night -- so it only took 24 hours to publish.

Monday Design Wall - Drunkard's Path

The Drunkard Path can be easy -- I still use the "old fashioned" method (with a little rotary help) -- and NO PINS! Already on hand, I used a pattern which finished a 3" block. I enlarged the two pattern units A & B (without seam allowance) on a copy machine to 6", then added the 1/4" seam allowance.

I glued the A & B pattern units to card board stock and cut out.

Cut 6 1/2" strips (WOF) from both the white and med-dark fabrics. Placing the "A" template on the strips and traced. I was able to cut 8 units per strip. What you don't see are the two layers of med-dark under the white.

For the "B" unit, use 4 1/2" strips, same method --- trace and cut.

Now -- a closeup of the TWEEZERS -- my favorite tool. I notch the curved center of both A & B units. starting from the top, I sew VERY slowly and if I am "off", I will see it by mid-way (the notches need to line up midway). Admission: "I did have to use the ripper 3 times"! Not bad on all the ones finished.

Finish - Stars Over Scott

A scrappy 76" x 86" quilt using 168 - 6 1/2" squares (84 Light, 84 Med-Dark); 3/4 yard for the inside border, 2 1/2 yards for outside border (if cutting length of fabric) or 1 3/4 yard (if cutting width of fabric), 3/4 yard for binding and 5 1/2 yards for backing.

Making the block:

Using 6 1/2" squares of one each light and med-dark, place right sides together, draw a line diagonally down the center, sewing 1/4" on each side of the line. Cut diagonally in half (as shown) along the drawn line. Open and press the half square triangles, trim to a perfect 5 1/2" square. Using the layout below, sew 12 blocks across, with 14 rows down.

Borders:
Inside: Sew together 7 - 2 1/2" strips diagonally and cut 2 - 70 1/2" strips for the sides, 2 - 64 1/2" strips for the top and bottom.

Outside: Cutting from the Length of fabric, cut 2 - 6 1/2" x 74 1/2" strips for the sides, 2 - 6 1/2" x 76 1/2" for the top and bottom.

Binding: 9 - 2 1/2" strips, joined diagonally.

That's it -- one block, quick and easy.

Yesterday, I finally revealed my "Brown Quilt", in the Monochromatic Challenge hosted by Judy. These quilts (made 2 of them) actually filled a few goals, The Challenge, A Gift, A Donation to the local Children's Home, A Pattern and A Class with our local guild.

The quilt I lovingly named for my son, "Stars over Scott", is done except for the binding, so I am counting it finished. I will reveal it on Friday (with a pattern) ..... here is a glimpse during the quilting.

On the other side, I have been shopping .... only to finish quilts, so I guess that is good.

The DJ Quilt and Pattern

Needing a masculine and simple quilt, I was inspired from a favorite shirt to create The DJ Quilt. The free PDF Pattern is available here. With enough fabric to make two tops, they were started and finished in one weekend. I sandwiched both, and started quilting on the first one until I had enough practice on the different designs, then moved over to the gifted top.

Since the sample quilt also turned out pretty good, it will be donated to the local Children's home -- our guild is a little short on quilts for the young boys.

On Friday, The DJ Quilt class was presented at our local guild meeting. Before coming home, I took a few pictures of some of their color variations which are below. Sat down at the computer, NO INTERNET! After waiting, waiting, and more waiting, I just checked the wires ... it helps to replug everything! Sorry cable company, I take back everything I said.

The DJ Quilt is coming Friday

What I have been doing ... Quilting Tops .... you can always tell when it gets quiet on this site. I have finished one, have one pinned and ready, another one with the binding needed, another one waiting for the border to be sewn on .... nothing different from most of you guys out there.

But, here is a little peek at what is coming Friday, all finished. Inspired by a favorite shirt, I have kept this one under wraps. The "DJ Quilt" (named for a nephew), will be my brown project for Judy's Patchwork Times Monochromatic Challenge (March) AND .... will be a class this Friday with our guild. It is masculine and simple -- can't wait.

Monday Design Wall -- H2H Update & Little Quilter

Hope everyone had a great Mother's Day Weekend -- we were so busy, this is the first time I have touched my computer in several days! I did manager to sew of course, finishing the blocks for the H2H Challenge. The blocks are labeled and stacked on the side of my machine waiting to be sewn together.

On Saturday, my sister Phyllis and I had a Mother's Day with her 2 granddaughters ... shopping, pedicures and lunch. While at her house, I took a picture of her design wall. No, this is not my sister's quilt, it is her granddaughter's. Alexis is 5 (youngest of 3) and has been sewing now for almost a year. Phyllis does the cutting and pinning, but Alexis does all the sewing! The other two, Alissa and Austin also sew quilt tops. Austin was fishing, so I will show his quilt another day.

H2H - Friday Update

Working on the Hands 2 Help Blocks, using the swapped fabric from KatyQ and a little of my own. These rail fence blocks are finished at 8", with 2 - 2" strips (WOF) and 1 - 5 1/2" strip (WOF), cut to 8 1/2" blocks. Very simple, with lots of impact when several fabrics are used. Most of the blocks will stay in the blue family, however I will be throwing in more yellows and maybe a little green (maybe).

H2H Update

I am participating in Hands 2 Help. We have exchanged fabric with an assigned partner (Kathy's fabric on top); added from our stash (mine on the bottom); and joined together we make a quilt for charity.

Sarah (Hands 2 Help host) has asked us to write something random about ourselves. Hmmmmm.... After majoring in Music for one year in college, I changed my path to business for a degree in Accounting, and a career with government. If you ask me what I do -- "I am a CFO" ..... if you ask me what I am, "I'm a quilter".

Friday Finish - Field of Violets

Donald and Aaron's garden is also the backdrop for the finally finished "Field of Violets" (February Color in Judy's Patchwork Times Monochromatic Challenge). I have the pattern started and will introduce it later in the year after I make another sample -- how about something "scrappy" ???? I have accumulated a list of 5 (still growing) of you who emailed me wanting the instructions. I will send each instructional step as they are completed in hopes of a little proofing from friends before going global :)!

There are really only 2 blocks: a 16 patch from 2" strips and "chubby pinwheels" from 3 1/2" blocks of violet and 2 1/2" of background. The tiny pinwheels are the cut aways from the "chubbies".

Today is "Good Friday" down in South Louisiana ..... it is also a day of Boiled Crawfish and quality time with Family.

Relay for Life -- Black and Gold

Sharing the "Spot Light" with this gorgeous garden, is my Black and Gold finish for the 2011 Relay for Life. I just picked it up from the Quilting Niche', who quilted their magic with a pattern of Fleur De Lis.

Many thanks to Donald and Aaron for the use of their amazing garden of paradise. I wanted to stage my quilt everywhere ... but I saved many of their little vignettes for future quilts.

Stash Report and EQ Layout of Stars

I recently finished this top using years of border scraps. When I finish quilting it, I will provide the instructions, which should take me about 5 minutes, since the block is a simple "Half Square Triangle". I still don't design in EQ, however it is great for documenting those designed on my wall.

My stash report looks much better this week. I have two (2) quilts to count as done -- both will be shown with my Friday Finishes.

Scrap quilts always make me happy. This one was especially fun to make as it was born on the design wall playing with the 5" blocks. I have been testing the borders this week and have settled on a green inner border, and brown print outside. I will sew them on tonight and will hopefully start quilting it.

Mary Ann and Stash Report - March 27, 2011

I am so proud -- Mary Ann and I worked together for years, and when she retired in 2009, she became a busy quilter. Every time she visits our office, she is showing me quilts finished and quilts in progress. Mary Ann made this quilt from my pattern "Kendra" for her sister who loves blues.

I have been missing from the stash reports because frankly, I had not bought anything and had not finished many projects being worked on -- until now. I needed borders and backing for the Black and Gold project, and backing for a special quilt not yet shown here.

"A Load of Scraps to Stars"

For several years I have joined border strips diagonally and cut away the excess. Those scraps have accumulated in a large shoe box which could no longer be closed. It was time to do something. I started cutting 6.5" squares from the white to off-white stash, cut them in half and started joining them to some of the cut-aways. Trimmed to 5 1/2" square, I then started playing with them on the wall. I'm done playing.

Before the borders, the top will measure 60 x 70. I will label each row and stack them on the side of my machine to join later. Actually, I probably have enough to do 3 more .... but the lid on the shoe box closes now, so it can wait.

Monday Design Wall - The Stars are Growing

My Design Wall and Sewing Machine have been somewhat quiet. The scrappy wall is moving slowly, and may change a few times before finishing with something I like.

As some of my readers know, I HATE to cook. But I DO cook. Our home is 26 years old and I still had the same stove and double oven - why change, they were fine. Then they weren't! We spent a whole day shopping for a new stove top and double oven. We did not want to go through the expense of changing the dimensions, so we shopped for the same size -- except I am getting one of those fancy glass tops (even faster cleaning). When you change built-in appliances - not much sewing for a week.

It is also Mardi Gras here in South Louisiana. Family is in from Texas -- there are parades, beads, shopping and more parades. So I must depend on other Design Walls over at Judy's Patchwork Times for my fix.

February has come and gone -- The "Violet" Challenge top is finished, the quilting is only about 1/2 way, but sadly .... not enough to show. Can't wait for the next color.

Monday Design Wall - Oh Scraps!

Those cut aways from borders have been taking over the shoe box! My preference is to cut the borders length wise, but when I don't have enough, I cut the width of the fabric and piece them together diagonnally. For whatever reason, I like the 6 1/2" width. When I was sewing together the 10" squares for the back of the "Violet" Challenge (below on the right), I sewed together lots of triangles in between and threw some of them up on the wall.

Monday Design Wall of Kaffe Fassett Flowers

A Quick Hello and glimpse of my design wall. I have a busy week of quilting a top (as in violet), so I need to leave this wall alone! The blocks are alternating 1" framed, 9-patches (9") and 1/2 Seam Flowers set on point using Kaffe Fassett fabric. One day this week, I will make another Kaffe Flower and take a picture of the process, which starts with 4 1/2 x 6 1/2" rectangles.

Saturday Sewing - Whoop Giveaway Spotted

I finished the blocks for the Violet Challenge and needed another project to sew in between (Bonnie Hunter Style) sewing the blocks together into rows .... rather than using those pesty rabbit ears to start and stop.

Something totally different, this project uses a collection of Kaffe fabric and solid Kona brown as the background. Those yellow centers are left overs from the January Yellow Challenge over at Patchwork Times. I thought I took a picture of the 1/2 seam flowers as they were sewn together, but I must have forgot. I will sew one later to show how I assembled it.

Moda Bake Shop - Kristy's Dream

Today is the BIG Day -- Kristy's Dream is being featured on the Moda Bake Shop! With the fabric line from Moda, a reproduction study of William Morris's 19th Century prints, by Barbara Brackman.

An open note to the designer Barbara Brackman -- Your fabric line is beautiful and true to its historic origin! Having the layer cake gave me access to each and every print and of course I had a few favorites ..... but I could not resist playing with each piece. I only wish my photography skills could pick up the detail of each block.

Below ... Meet my oldest niece Kristy Lynn, the pattern's namesake -- Her dream came true when she became a Mom to four beautiful girls, Alleigh, Emma, Piper and McKinley. The first quilt -- used the gorgeous Moda fabric line "Boutique" by Chez Moi.

RRCB Mystery Quilt Update

The "Roll Roll Cotton Boll" Mystery (by Bonnie Hunter) blocks are done .... so .... they are all coming down. I will label each row and stack'm high. The borders are pieced and also ready for attachment. I have not decided yet whether I will use my gift certificate to our LQS, The Quilting Niche', or quilt her myself. Next time you see her - she will be done.

Hello There Yellow!

Judy Laquidara from Patchwork Times, is hosting a Monochromatic Challenge this year. For the month of January, she randomly chose "Yellow". I used a range of very yellow to golden, finishing at a size of 48 x 64.

Monday Design Wall -- RRCB Progress

This past weekend has been about quilting tops and binding. The Yellow Monochromatic Challenge is done and will post at 2:00 PM this afternoon. I can't wait to see the next color, especially now that my least favorite color is now out of the way. Although....I actually liked the finished quilt.

The above design wall is progressing with the RRCB Mystery Top, by Bonnie Hunter.... on the ironing board, the remaining blocks in various stages of completion. Hopefully by next Design Wall, this will be done.

Friday Finish - Red/Gold Version

Sarah, at Confessions of a Fabric Addict is hosting her new linky "Whoop Whoop Friday". A party where we can gather to share our progress.

Here is mine -- all finished! A Red/Gold version of "Nicole's Journey". The pattern / tutorial is available, however there is a little difference. I added a 2" inner border and 6" outside border for fun. I have a HUGE collection of gold metallic fat quarters. Most of them came from our LQS, The Quilting Niche' when they have $1.50 fat quarter Saturdays.

Up close quilting -- wish I would have changed to red thread on the red fabric, but I will live with it.

And -- a closeup of the border. Finished size: 63 x 88.

Work in Progress - Quilting Yellow

Quilting this little yellow top is quick and fun! I am keeping the pattern very simple, a little outline of each hexagon, with a center star flower --- the real fun will come on the border --- it is screaming for a feathery treatment. I just MIGHT make Judy's Monochromatic Challenge for January over at Patchwork Times.

Ok Judy -- now that January is coming to a close, I have all these patterns floating around in my head for the next color -- and a lot more scraps to tame.

SPREAD THE WORD!

My blogging buddy Sarah, at Confessions of a Fabric Addict has created a new fun Friday to gather with other quilty friends to share our projects. I am linking up, so I will be part of this historic Friday.

My little project is a pillowcase, not just any pillowcase, something very special -- it is a companion project to my next Moda Bake Shop Project, set to premier on February 9th! The project is made from Barbara Brackman's new "A Morris Tapestry", a reproduction line of William Morris' 19th century prints. I am sooooo in love with this fabric.

Now, hopefully I will have the quilt below finished for next Whoop, Whoop Friday! Congrats Sarah -- see ya next Friday!
